Cairns Museum reopens after $1.6m redevelopment
After two years of refurbishment and renovation costing $1.6m the Cairns Museum has reopened on the corner of Lake and Shields Streets in the Cairns CBD.
Cairns Museum marketing manager Judy Freeman, a well-known tourism identity as well as being the founder of Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park , says it is very rewarding to be able to take a new Cairns tourism attraction to the global tourism industry.
“The Cairns Museum has been well received by tourism operators locally, domestically and internationally,” says Mrs Freeman.
“The Museum has been included in day tours picked up by the cruise industry and has the backing of the local tour desks, which are critical to the success of the Cairns Museum.”
She says the Museum is also a big attraction for local residents. During the renovation, the Cairns Historical Society protected the museums historical assets, images and its objects. The result is a world class museum that looks set to become a major tourist attraction for Cairns.
Tourism and Events Queensland Director and Down Under Tours Managing Director, James Dixon says the Museum is an asset to the Cairns region.
“The museum is beautifully done, professionally presented and will be a great asset to our city. The tourism industry has needed something like this desperately,” Mr Dixon says.
The Cairns Museum is also providing training for some 40 volunteers to become tour guides, and is following all the protocols for acceptance into an industry that is a major contributor to the Cairns economy.
