Cairns Student Hub shortlisted for major award

The Cairns Student Hub, along with Brisbane and Gold coast Student Hubs has been shortlisted for PIEoneer Awards 2018 under Study Queensland – Student Hubs Network.

Study Queensland – Student Hubs Network is vying for the Student Support Award and are among one of five organisations short listed for this prestigious award.

The PIEoneer Awards celebrate innovation and achievement in international education. The awards are based on achievements in 2017. The PIE produces a shortlist of finalists for each award category by reviewing all submissions which are then presented to a panel of judges independent of The PIE. One winner from each award category is selected with winners announced in London on 7 Sep 2018.

In all, 65 nominees have made the shortlist – 26 in Europe, 13 from North America, 11 from Australasia, six in Asia, and one each from the Middle East and Africa.
A key trend in innovation this year was seen in initiatives aimed at helping students gain an advantage in the jobs market, with finalists in the Public-Private Partnership category, Progressive Education Delivery, Digital Innovation (Learning) and Student Support award category shortlisted for relevant jobs or careers initiatives.

The Student Award Category asked nominees to present submission based on how the organisation makes international students feel welcomed into the community. Initiatives might include education or ambassador programs, mentoring, buddy-systems – anything that helps international students to assimilate.

Study Queensland  submitted a comprehensive nomination outlining how the Student Hub Network has benefited the 120,000 international students and 50,000 short stay learners through study tours and short course programs. These students visit Queensland each year from 160 countries with the three major centres of Cairns, Gold Coast and Brisbane attracting 90% of these international students.

The Student Hub Network came through substantial industry consultation as part of the Queensland Government’s International Education and Training Strategy to Advance Queensland 2016-2026. The sector and government worked together to focus on how Queensland sets itself apart as a welcoming destination for international students, aligning services and programs for students. The result is the Student Hub Network, offering services and support for domestic and international students, providing a ‘one-stop-shop’ for community and business engagement.

Some of the key activities of the student hub network includes providing workshops and activities that respond to student needs including cultural orientation, volunteer opportunities, support and community connections.

THE PIE is an independent media, recruitment and events company offering services for professionals working in international education across the globe.
Winners of the PIEoneer Awards will be announced in London on 7 September 2018.
