Local students give G20 delegates a taste of Cairns
Treasurer Joe Hockey and Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch today announced that local students will play an important part in welcoming G20 delegates to Cairns next week.
Twenty-three Cairns TAFE students will be there when some of the world’s most influential political and economic leaders come to town for the G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting.
The hospitality, tourism and marketing students will be among the friendly faces staffing information desks, providing event support at the meeting venues and cooking meals.
Two of the students, apprentice chefs Emily Burton and Thomas Zerbinotto, have been selected to join the team at one of the region’s top restaurants to give delegates a taste of Australia’s high quality natural produce and fine wines.
Mr Hockey said he was looking forward to welcoming G20 finance ministers and central bank governors to Cairns.
“I’ve spent some time in Cairns this year and admire the passion the local community have for their beautiful city,” Mr Hockey said.
“I know G20 delegates will be given a warm welcome to Cairns and having local students as ambassadors really is a wonderful opportunity for them and for Queensland,” Mr Hockey said.
Mr Entsch said it was great to see local young people getting involved in such an important world event.
“Our young people are fantastic ambassadors for our community and for Australia,” Mr Entsch said.
“It’s not just our natural beauty and cultural attractions that make Cairns an attractive tourism destination, it’s our world-class hospitality. That’s what these students will bring and I congratulate them for that.”
